Andrew Brooks

Andrew Brooks is a photographer, digital artist and film maker from Manchester.  Many of his pieces involve taking several, even hundreds of photos of a place over a period of time, from different angles and merging them together and digitally manipulating them until he’s satisfied. For example he showed us this busy airport scene, the single image was the result of 45 minutes worth of movement, the photo captures his experience of the place and how it changed over the period of time he was there.

He said it is always his aim to convey the atmosphere and feeling of a place in his photos, like the warmth of the sun or the coldness of a cityscape and to give the viewer a real sense of what it’s like to be there. In 2008 Andrew had an exhibition at the Urbis called “Hidden Manchester”,  It’s an amazing series of photographs showing the hidden face of the city and it’s a unique opportunity to see places in Manchester that are normally hidden from public view.

Cornerhouse

I went to a talk on the corner house that explained to me what it is that the building does for the city, I had initially thought that the building was just a cinema that showed mainly independent and foreign films. However from this talk i also discovered that the Cornerhouse also has 3 Galleries inside (which i have since been to visit) and that it sells a large collection of artists books.
We were also told while at this talk about the developments that would be going on for the cornerhouse in the future. The building is merging with the Library Theatre Company in order to create a new home for them which shall also include a theatre. The project intends to be completed by 2014 and it shall see the cornerhouse move away from oxford road and down behind hotspur house.

Success - A dirty word?

I read an article in a very old 80’s Manchester student magazine with the headline “Is success a dirty word?” describing how if people are not aiming for something, striving to be successful, then in the eyes of other and the media they are unimportant. This reminded me of the contrast I viewed when searching through manchester.

Visual Resources Centre

Today a couple members of our group went to a talk about the slides available at the Visual Resources Centre. This is a room found on the bottom floor of Cavendish next to the weave room. We were shown a range of slides that are available within the collection. This includes collections of past work from the Manchester School of Art as well as many images taken across Manchester starting from around the 1960s.

As well as using the slides available it was also suggested that we would be able to create our own slides for this project if we wanted to. Also looking into old ordnance survey was suggested as an idea so that we can see how Manchester has physically changed over time.

Several of the slides have been digitalised and put onto flicker. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mmuvisualresources/

Last night i was lucky enough to attend MMU's hosting of the Fashion Fringe Road Show starring Fashion Designer Mathew Williamson in conversation with the Sunday Times fashion writer Colin McDowell.

Not only was this a great experience for me, but it opened my eyes to the bigger picture of being a student and persuing a career after uni. Colin Mcdowell made a relaxed interview enviroment for Williamson and the rest of the lecture theatre, asking him questions about his early live in Manchester and the ambitions that he had since he was very young. They talked about how Williamson found Central St Martins at such a young age and how he got to where he is now from Graduating.

The thing that i took away from this lecture was that you need to have inspiration and knowlage for everything that you do to create and work is only going to be created if pu the time and heart into the beginning, Williamson said that he spends 60% of his day creating. whether thats picking up new design ideas or having meetings to discuss the change of colour in curtain lines. He also gave some interesting advice.

*Point of difference - have you got something to offer that the world hasnt seen.

*Single minded Development - only you can work out what you want for your work.

*Unique point of you - if you know you have the ability to get there then you will
